Profile of the subject

Business in the Global South

This module is designed to expand your knowledge of contemporary developments over trading relations in an international sphere, with emphasis on different theoretical approaches as well as contemporary developments in the global financial system. By exploring historical and contemporary perspectives, students will develop insights into the challenges, opportunities, and unique economic factors that shaping developing regions. The objectives of the course include:

  • To understand the socio-economic landscape of the Global South and its influence on economic activities.
  • To analyze theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence relevant to economic of developing countries.
  • To evaluate strategies for market entry, sustainability, and ethical business conduct in diverse cultural contexts.
  • To examine case studies and real-world examples to illustrate key concepts and challenges faced by businesses in the Global South.

At the end of this module, students will be able to: Knowledge:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of core-periphery relations in historical and theoretical perspectives (SEI, CI)
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the historical and contemporary economic theories relevant in the Global South.
  3. Critically interpret complex functions of globalization/financialization and their impacts on the global south (SEI, IC)

Thinking skills:

  1. Analyze the socio-economic factors influencing economic activity and policy strategies in developing regions.
  2. Apply theoretical knowledge to real-world case studies and develop strategic recommendations for economic activities in the Global South.
  3. Analyze linkages between trade, FDI and uneven and combined development (SEI, EE, IC)
  4. Develop an appreciation of the economic, welfare dimensions of economics, social and political issues (SEI, COI)

Subject-based practical skills:

  1. Evaluate the effectiveness of different market entry strategies and sustainable business practices in diverse cultural contexts.
  2. Use technology to evaluate datasets in order to explore relationships between measures of growth and development (DP, COI)
  3. Develop familiarity with the possibility that many economic problems may admit more than one approach or candidate solution (COI)

Skills for life and work (general skills):

  1. Critically assess the impact of global events and shifts in the economic landscape on businesses in developing countries.
  2. Develop a nuanced view of the political economics of the Global South and its positioning in the global division of labor (SEI, CI,COI)
  3. Demonstrate a capacity for independent study and self-managed learning, especially on matters related to poverty, health, education, and social welfare in general (SEI, COI)

Teaching Methods and Learning Activities:

The following method/strategies will be used as appropriate to the listed learning outcomes:

  • Interactive lectures giving students the choice to ask questions "on the spot"
  • Guest lecturer program to expose them in different views and use of videos to reach out to even broader understandings of the module themes
  • Seminars aiming at generating individual creativity and leadership skills through teamwork and presentations while deepening on the themes tackled at the lectures
  • Use of the virtual learning environment to complement seminars and lectures with additional reading and advice
